Stittsville, ON – Saturday, July 5, 2014 – Kirk Mulligan –
This past Saturday afternoon was one of the hottest days at Capital City
Speedway (CCS). The fans in attendance
were dazzled with some of the best racing series events in the nation. CCS’s Summer Sizzler featured one of
Ontario’s most famous racing series, the Lucas Oil Sportsman Series (100 lap). Also on the card was the first ever
appearance at CCS of two other racing series, the OSCAAR modifieds and the
Revstar SRT mini sprints.
For the first time in 9 years, the Lucas Oil Sportsman
series made the trip to CCS. Many
drivers travelled long distances to be on hand for this race. In fact, the race featured 15 teams in total
including a handful of local teams. Local
drivers consisted of Todd Musker (car #13), Jerremy Coulter (car #6), Doug
Cathcart (car #48) and Dave Connelly (car #82).
Local driver, Dave Connelly, was trying to be a repeat winner after
winning the last Sportsman series contest at Flamboro Speedway. Unfortunately for Dave, the McGlynn brothers
had other plans. The race began with
Jake “the juice box” Ott (car #60) starting in the pole position. The juice box and Chad McGlynn (car #18) on
the outside pole battled for the lead in the early going. But, the hard charging Chad McGlynn finally
took the lead and never looked back.
Chad fought off challenges from his brother Shawn (car #81) throughout
the race. However, it was the younger
brother Chad that would be victorious on this day.
The Revstar SRT mini sprints feature was next to sizzle at
CCS. These mini sprints are typically
ran on a dirt track. However, a ten car
field led by Patrick Manny (car #32) was ready to assault the asphalt. Most of these cars travelled many hours from
eastern Quebec. The long drive didn’t
seem to faze the racers as the cars took the green flag and screamed for 25
laps. At the half way mark, Frederick
Faubert (car #24) had just taken over the lead.
In lap 14, Sabrina Blanchet (car #79S) and Patrick Rheaume (car #71)
collided in turn 2 to bring out a caution.
On the restart, Manny tried to regain the lead from Faubert, but, his
efforts were not enough as Faubert hung on for the win.
Another first time visitor to CCS was the OSCAAR modified
series. Drivers from all over southern
Ontario make the trek to the Ottawa valley hot spot. An 11 car field took the green flag in two 25
lap feature events. The first event saw Gary
McLean (car #8) in the pole position battle with Dustin Jackson (car #61) for
the lead. But after lap 3, the race was
dominated by McLean as he easily held on to win the first OSCAAR feature
event. The second feature was a similar
story as Max Beyore (car #91N) started in the pole position and easily cruised
to victory lane.
Finally, we ended the day with a 100 lap, 31 car
enduro! The only way to describe this
race is: “complete insanity”! The
winners in the 8 cylinder and 4 cylinders classes are shown below.
