Stittsville, ON – Wednesday, July 9, 2014 – Kirk Mulligan – A
busy Wednesday evening was upon us as Capital City Speedway’s (CCS) Sports
Systems Canada, Mould Family Memorial race night presented 6 feature races and a
fan appreciation event. The features
included the five weekly classes of Late Model, Legend, Mini Stock, Thunder and
4-For-Fun (4FF) as well as an extra Sportsman Modified feature. Furthermore, the fans in attendance were treated
to a night of record car counts in all divisions. However, before I get into the action I want
to make special mention and thanks to Mike Atwell of the Atwell 4FF (car #72)
racing team. Mike personally donated 2
sets of tickets to raffle off to 4 lucky fans during the fan appreciation event. The tickets were for admission to one of the
biggest events of season, CCS Monster Madness happening July 26th
and 27th! Congratulations to
lucky fans Steve Roy and the birthday boy Jarett Reis for winning the tickets! I also want to make special mention and thanks
to Legend driver Steve Yendall (car #1) and Hunter McCaig of Rideau Auctions for
donating a brand new kids bicycle to be raffled off after the Legend
feature. Congratulations to 2 year old
Austin West for winning the bicycle! Lastly,
I want to thank all the drivers who participated in the fan appreciation event
during intermission. The CCS staff and
fans appreciated every second of the experience from the candy, autographs, and
collector cards to the words of racing wisdom.
It was a fantastic event! There
definitely was an enormous amount of prizes for the fans but, the best prize of
all was the racing! Drivers and crews
worked meticulously on their cars throughout the heats. In fact, the heats did not see any repeat
winners.
Immediately after fan appreciation was the Legend 20 lap feature. The
race began with Brad Haufe (car #17) starting in the pole position. Points leader Kevin Foisy (car #57) started near
the back in 5th position followed by his team mate Brian Saunders
(car #15) in 6th position.
Saunders was looking for an upset win as he upset the points leader with a victory in the 2nd heat.
Unofficially, I think he is the only one to have done this feat all
year! However, Foisy would have none of
it, as he took the lead in the early going on lap 4. Saunders followed Foisy’s lead and took 2nd
place by lap 5. Unfortunately, it wasn’t
enough as Foisy cruised to another victory.
Next up, was the Drummond’s Gas 20 lap Late Model
feature. Tim Kirby (car #10) and Sean
Kennedy (car #14) made up the front row.
After the green flag dropped, Kirby jumped out to an early lead. But, from out of nowhere Steve Munro (car
#00) took second place behind Kirby.
Munro was all over Kirby’s rear bumper just waiting for Kirby to make a
vital mistake. On lap 14, Kirby got
slightly loose on the back stretch. But,
that was enough for the veteran Munro to sneak through and take over the lead. In fact, points leader Justin Holtom (car
#17) sitting in 3rd place quickly followed Munro to take over 2nd
place sending Kirby to 3rd spot.
Holtom did everything he possibly could to catch Munro. However, it was
not enough as Munro went on to take home his 3rd feature win of the
season!
The 15 lap Sportsman feature started off with a bang! Doug Buzzell (car #80EH) and Jeff Crawford
(car #31) connected in turn 3 and that resulted in a complete restart. Dana Aikens (car #8A) started in the pole
position. Unfortunately for everyone
else that is where he stayed for the remainder of the race. Cars in positions 2 through 6 were bumping
and grinding throughout the entire race.
But, as I said earlier, the night belonged to Aikens.
Another first occurred in the 15 lap Thunder car
feature. Chris MacDonald (car #03)
started in the pole position next to Jessica Pasinetti (car #56). Pasinetti was driving a new car tonight. As a matter of fact, it was rumored that the Pasinetti
team thought they had the wrong gear set up.
Whatever the gear, her car was hooked up as she took the lead by lap
2. Pasinetti then fended off challenges
from both points leaders Neil Leblond (car #88) and Casey Cavanagh (car #49). Pasinetti then cruised to her first ever feature
win! Congratulations Jessica!
The last race of the night was a barn burner. There was a total of 10 4FF set to go in a 10
lap feature race. In addition, the race
included an out of town driver Rob Fountain (car #29). Fountain hauled his car all the way from
Edmonton, Alberta. I think that is at
least a 60 hour drive! Fountain was
determined to race at CCS as he had avoided a near encounter with a moose the
night before in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Our
hats are off to you Rob Fountain for coming and trying out our track! Fountain started in the 8th
position and finished in 6th.
This race was full of excitement.
But, the man on the move was Brian “Pops” MacDonald (car #80) as he
moved from 4th place to the lead.
MacDonald looked strong and swept up a sweet victory.
This week, Wednesday evening, July 16, 2014, is the G. W. Memorial
Night. The race night will feature Late
Models, Legends, Mini Stock, Thunder and 4-For-Fun divisions. Also in town is the special feature Vintage Modified
division. There will also be a Hall of
Fame induction ceremony during intermission.
The races will start at 7:15 pm sharp!
Regular general admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for
teens (13-16) and as always children 12 & under are free.
